Hooray! The world is opening. You probably have seen a nice ramp up over the last two weeks. Celebrate yes, but be cautious too. I know that you are confused as I am about COVID. Each report contradicts the next report. Here is one stat that I am carefully watching...are the hospitals being overrun again.
That to me is the most important barometer. If the hospitals get overrun again, it is going to be a very uphill battle of getting businesses to stay online. Arizona reported yesterday that they are putting the hospitals back on emergency alert. Eleven other states are seeing big spikes. Remember we will see bigger spikes because more testing is being done. So celebrate for now but keep a cautious eye out also.
So what to do now? This is easy. Just stick to the basic principals of running a business. Remember all businesses ebb and flow. This ebb, I agree is a bit unprecedented but doing the following will always get you through:
1. Have a vision
2. Have a written plan to create that vision
3. Have a market dominating position
4. Know and understand your numbers
5. Have neutral third party advisors to guide you
5. A great way for you to generate free publicity is being first and creating your own category.
Too many businesses are:
- Me too
- Me better
Those are two guaranteed ways to make a bad living while working super hard. I often refer to it as ‘confusing being busy with being successful.’
Uber, Airbnb, Amazon, ESPN, Hertz, KFC, Band-Aid are some of the major brands that created their own categories and subsequently were FIRST.
Think of it as using “Public Relations” to build your brand strategically…
Then using advertising to maintain it.
But first you need to create something that’s worth writing / talking about.
